Create a decorative gradient background of dots, diamonds, or squares with GIMP

How do I use GIMP to create a decorative gradient background of dots, diamonds, or squares?

Gnu Image Manipulation Program can be used to create decorative and repeating backgrounds. The following very simple tutorial can be used to create a gradient background of dots or circles, diamonds or squares.
  1. Start GIMP and create new image - say 300x600 pixels in size
  2. Set the background color to something dark, use midnightblue for this example.
  3. Add new layer
  4. Select gradient and make sure that the Gradient tool options have the gradient set as FG to BG.
  5. Set a new, light color to the foreground (upper gradient) and set midnightblue to the background of the gradient.

Load fast

Slow loading sites tend to be annoying to use, assuming you don't abandom them for another after the first eight or ten seconds. Although the advent of broadband/DSL has successfully improved load speed it is still up to the designer, developer or site administrator to keep page size within reason. Although the biggest causes of slow loading sites are poorly optimized and too many large images, there are other factor contributors.

WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) type web design programs may be nice for building simple web sites, but what they can't really convey is the importance of managing images/pictures. Everyone will have a different opinion what is reasonable for pages size. If your audience is comprised totally of fast broadband viewers then a 250KB page is reasonable. To put image size in perspective, a common 6 MegaPixel digital camera is capable of producing 2.5MB (2500KB) size images, meaning that a single unoptimized image can bring a site to its knees. It is part of our process to both educate our clients as well as work out these types of problems.

Search engine friendly

Search engine friendly means that a website is both inviting and easy for search engines such as google and yahoo to index their content. Indexing refers to a process in which the search engine visits a website and capture the site content, then dumps it into the search engine's content database. When you do a search in a search engine's search field, it is actually checking the local database then spitting out qualified results. It might sound like a given but not all websites are search engine friendly.

There are a number of factors that can impact how search engine friendly a site is. Just a few include 1) designed with frames, 2) Flash site, 3) JavaScript navigation without 'alt' images and 4) Black-hat search engine optimization techniques.

Current Practices Web Development

In developing and designing web sites we use current practices, current technology in creating pages and sites. If you have an older site that was designed in frames we can redesign it to be user friendly using CSS and JavaScript, which will effectively make it search engine friendly as well. We will also set up the site or pages to be XHTML compliant and CSS compliant as necessary.
